Source and licence

Both editions are free software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. Copyright (C) 2026 Michael Slater (Heisenberg). The desktop edition shares its retro screen, portrait and music code with The Broken Seal.

Desktop edition

Free Pascal 3.2.2 and Lazarus 4.4 (LCL, GTK2 on Linux). Source: sengoku-1.2.0-source.tar.gz from the downloads page.

make # bin/linux/sengoku
make test # the self-test (about 1,900 checks)
make gui-test # plays the real window under Xvfb

make dist builds the Linux package, the Windows installer and the source tarball. The source's README.md has the details, including the Windows cross-build and the MSI.

Browser edition

TypeScript, bundled with esbuild. It needs Node.js 18 or later.

npm install
npm run build # the page, in dist/
npm run build:server # the multi-player games server, in dist-server/
npm test # the self-test and the server test

The browser edition's self-test has the same checks as the desktop's, plus its own. A battle fought from the same seed with the same moves comes out the same in both editions, and both self-tests check one.

The rule for changes: anything changed in one edition is changed in the other. Multi-player games are the one part that exists only in the browser edition.

The multi-player server

The server is in the browser edition's source, in server/. It runs the same game code as the page, under Node.js, with no other software needed. It keeps each game's world, checks every order, and replays every battle from the moves the browser sends. server/README.md describes its settings, its files and its admin commands.
