The Broken Seal

The Broken Seal is a turn-based strategy game of officers, provinces and alliances, written for Kalgoorlie Retro Gaming. You lead a noble house in a realm whose ruler is gone. Each month you give orders to your provinces and officers; when the month ends, every house's orders are carried out together and you read what happened. The throne goes to whoever holds two-thirds of the realm, alone or with allies.

Your officers do the work. Each has ratings for command, warfare, administration and intrigue, a character, a loyalty that can fail, and stamina that work wears down. They develop farmland and trade, repair forts, train troops, gather news of the neighbours and lead your armies. When armies meet you can fight the battle yourself on a hex field, or leave it to your commanders.

The current version is 0.6.1 (3 November 2026).

Two editions, one game

Edition Where Players
Browser https://retro.theiguru.au/brokenseal/play/ (nothing to install) One player against the computer, or multi-player games with other people
Desktop Windows and Linux, from https://retro.theiguru.au/brokenseal/ One player against the computer

The two editions have the same rules, screens and save files. The browser edition is a line-by-line port of the desktop's Free Pascal code to TypeScript, and the two are checked against each other: the same campaign played in both gives byte-identical saves. A campaign exported from the browser opens in the desktop edition, and the reverse. See Saves.
